Height For Males and Females in the Indian Army

Medical boards have set different height criteria for both males and females to join the Indian Army. 

  • Male candidates should not have a height less than 157.5 cm
  • Female candidates should not have a height less than 152 cm

Note: Candidates belonging to the north-eastern region or hilly areas get relaxation up to 5 cms. This includes (Gorkhas, Kumaonies, Garhwalis, Assamese, etc.)

It is to be noted that candidates belonging to the hilly areas or the north eastern region would get some relaxation depending on their body measurements. 

Chest – Medical Standards in the Army for Both Males and Females

Medical boards have set minimum chest requirements for both males and females. 

  • Both the male and female have a well-formed chest.
  • For male candidates, a minimum of 5 cm of chest expansion is required while inhaling air. 

Important Note: Readings for chest in instruments are:

  • Less than 0.5 will be measured as 0.0 cm
  • 0.5 is measured as 0.5 cm
  • More than 0.5cm is recorded as 1 cm.

Vision Criteria For Males and Females in the Army

The candidate must meet the standard vision requirements. There are two branches, Executive and Technical. Each has different vision standards.

Physical Conditions

Medical Boards have set some physical standards for both males and females to join the Indian Army. 

  • Earwax is not allowed.  
  • You should be free from any skin conditions, such as acne vulgaris, warts, or fungal infections.  
  • There should be no dental cavities, which include temporary fillings, and a minimum of 14 dental points is required.  
  • You must not have had a hernia or abdominal surgery within the past year.  
  • No hydrocele, varicocele, or haemorrhoids are permitted.  
  • Any condition affecting the bones and joints will result in immediate disqualification.  
  • You should not have a history of mental breakdowns or seizures.  
  • Adequate hearing ability is necessary.  
  • Any evidence of functional or structural heart and vascular diseases will lead to rejection.  
  • Blood pressure must be within the normal range.
  • Tattoos are strictly prohibited except inner side of the forearms and the reverse side of the back or palm. However, for tribal groups, there is a relaxation of having their religious tattoos.
