Eligibility Criteria: Can You Join?

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the NDA entrance exam twice every year through its two testing sessions, NDA I and NDA II. To be eligible, you must meet the following strict standards:

Nationality: You must be an Indian citizen (subjects of Nepal/Bhutan and certain refugees are also eligible).

Age Limit: Candidates must be between 16.5 and 19.5 years when the course starts.

Gender: Both male and female candidates are now eligible to apply.

Educational Qualification: 

• Army Wing: 12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern or equivalent.
• Air Force & Navy Wings: 12th Class pass with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.

Marital Status: Only unmarried candidates are eligible.

The Selection Process for NDA: The Road to Khadakwasla

The National Defence Academy requires applicants to complete several phases, which assess their cognitive abilities, personal traits and their physical capabilities. Here is the breakdown for the Selection Process for NDA.

Stage 1: Written Examination 

The written test consists of two objective-type papers. Mathematics 300 Marks tests students on Algebra, Calculus, Trigonometry and Statistics. General Ability Test GAT 600 Marks tests students on two main subjects, which are English and General Knowledge, including Physics and Chemistry, History and Geography and Current Affairs

Stage 2: SSB Interview

Candidates who clear the written cutoff are called for a 5-day Services Selection Board SSB Interview. This test requires candidates to complete multiple assessments of their personality through

• Intelligence and Personality Tests: OIR Officer Intelligence Rating and PPDT Picture Perception and Description Test
• Group Tasks: GTO Testing teamwork and leadership
• Psychological Evaluation: Assessment of mental stability and Officer Like Qualities OLQs

Life and Training at the NDA Academy

The three-year training at NDA is divided into six terms. The daily schedule starts at 4:00 AM and continues until “Lights Out”, which occurs at 10:00 PM.

Academic Excellence

The school maintains intense physical training programs while simultaneously supporting academic study. JNU awards cadets their Bachelor’s degree, which includes B.A., B.Sc., and B.Tech degrees at the time of graduation.

Army Cadets: Pursue B.Sc/B.Sc (Computer)/B.A.

Navy and Air Force Cadets: Pursue a B.Tech degree.

Physical and Military Training

The academy develops “moral fibre” and physical strength through its training programs, which include:

• Drill and Parade: Mastering discipline and precision.
• Sports: Compulsory participation in games like hockey, football, and boxing.
• Specialised Camps: The organisation provides survival training programs which take place in wilderness areas, including Camp Green Horn and Camp Torna.

Career After NDA: The Final Commission

After completing three years at Khadakwasla, cadets are awarded their degrees and move to their respective academies for one year of specialised military training:

• Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun (Army)
• Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala (Navy)
• Air Force Academy (AFA), Dundigal (Air Force)

Upon completion of this final year, they are commissioned as Lieutenants (Army), Sub-Lieutenants (Navy), or Flying Officers (Air Force).
