If you’re a serving soldier dreaming of becoming a commissioned officer in the Indian Army, the Army Cadet College (ACC) Entry Scheme is your golden ticket. But before you start preparing, the most critical question every aspirant asks is: Am I even eligible?
This blog answers exactly that — in complete detail. No fluff. No confusion.
The ACC exam is not for civilians. It is an internal entry route solely for the serving personnel of the Indian Armed Forces – soldiers, sailors and airmen – wishing to get a commission as an officer without leaving service. That is what makes it different from NDA or CDS, where civilians also compete.
If you’re in service and are planning to advance your rank by completing a combined college and military education training program, you have to meet all the qualification requirements discussed in this guide.
The ACC exam is open to serving personnel from three branches of the Indian Armed Forces:
Can’t be a civilian, ex-Serviceman or Defence civilian. Must be in an active position on the date of application.
This is the eligibility condition most often overlooked. Simply being in uniform is not enough, but you do need to have at least two years’ service from the date of enrolment.
A minimum of two years ensures that the candidate has had some military training and discipline, as well as knowledge of service life, before it is decided that officership is the way to go. Incoming recruits are not eligible to apply.
The age criteria for the ACC exam 2026 are clearly defined:
The age is calculated as of the cut-off date mentioned in the official notification released by the Military Training Directorate. Candidates must ensure they fall within this bracket on that specific date, not on the exam date.
Important note: Candidates who are close to the upper age limit of 27 should calculate carefully, as even a few days’ difference can make them ineligible. Always refer to the official notification for the exact cut-off date.
The minimum educational qualification required to appear in the ACC exam is:
Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent from a recognised board in any stream.
A few points worth noting:
Both married and unmarried serving personnel are eligible to apply for ACC. There is no such condition of marital status that makes this scheme more inclusive than some other defence entry routes.
This is one of the eligibility criteria that is a must and never negotiable. Many candidates ignore this eligibility criterion. To be eligible for ACC, you should be in the medical category SHAPE-1 of the Indian Army.
SHAPE-1 is the top fitness group in the Indian Army, which means the soldier is completely fit and eligible for all kinds of jobs, including field posting.
What this means practically:
Academic and physical eligibility are not enough – your service conduct record also plays a role. The following service conditions must be met:
Annual Confidential Reports (ACRs): Your performance reports should be characterised by a clean record.
No Disciplinary Action Pending: Applicants with current court martial proceedings, punishment entries, or pending disciplinary cases are ineligible.
Commanding Officer’s recommendation: Every applicant must submit a recommendation from the applicant’s Commanding Officer (CO). The CO must approve the application and be in support of the applicant.
It means that now it is not just the exam that counts, but also your record and achievements in your current unit. Begin today to leave such a record.
Candidates will have 3 attempts to sit the ACC exam. Once you have used your three attempts, there is no second chance in a lifetime – no matter how old you are or how long you’ve been serving.
Since the ACC exam takes place twice a year(March/April and September/October sessions), three attempts means you have somewhere between a year and a year and a half to crack it. Make sure each of those attempts counts.
Before you submit your application, run through this checklist:
| Eligibility Condition | Requirement |
| Service Branch | Regular Army / Navy / Air Force / TA |
| Minimum Service | 2 years from enrolment |
| Age | 20 to 27 years |
| Educational Qualification | 10+2 or equivalent |
| Marital Status | Married or Unmarried (both allowed) |
| Medical Category | SHAPE-1 |
| Service Record | Clean ACRs, no disciplinary cases |
| CO Recommendation | Mandatory |
| Maximum Attempts | 3 chances only |
While Miscalculating the age cut-off: Always refer to the specific cut-off date in each official notification; do not assume it matches the exam date.
The ACC Entry Scheme is one of the most respected and career-transforming pathways available to a serving soldier. It offers not just a rank upgrade, but a full degree, comprehensive officer training, and a permanent commission in the Indian Army.
If you meet the eligibility conditions listed above, your next step is to start preparing from today. Given only three attempts and a limited age window, time is not on your side, but your discipline, which got you into the Armed Forces in the first place, absolutely is.
