Army SSB Centres

The “Elimination Round” is over if you have cleared your Written Exam, but if you are ready to take up the SSB Interview, then it is time for you to move into the “Selection Round.” The SSB Interview is a crucial step for all those who aspire to join the Indian Army ranks. The Army SSB Centres are where your “Officer-Like Qualities” are put through a rigorous test over a period of five days.

This article is a deep dive into the Army SSB Centres located in India, where you need to know everything you need to know to crack your SSB interview in 2026.

An Overview of Army SSB Centres

The Indian Army has established four main Selection Centres which handle its recruitment operations. Each centre functions as the main authority that oversees several Services Selection Boards (SSBs). Your call-up letter will instruct you to report to one of the hubs that corresponds with your entry type and regional location.

1. Selection Centre East (SCE), Prayagraj (Allahabad)

It is also referred to as the “rejection centre” by some due to the huge number of candidates, while for others it is the “city of hope.” The SSB Allahabad is the oldest and largest selection centre in India.

  • Location: Cariappa Road, Civil Lines, Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
  • Boards: 11 SSB, 14 SSB, 18 SSB, 19 SSB, and 34 SSB.
  • Why it’s unique: The centre witnesses a huge influx of candidates for NDA, CDS, and TGC entries. The centre is located in a historical site, and the GTO grounds are challenging for candidates.

2. Selection Centre Central (SCC), Bhopal

The centre is located at the “heart of India” and is famous for its “lush green environment” and “high-class facilities.”

  • Location: Sultania Infantry Lines, Navri Road, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
  • Boards: 20 SSB, 21 SSB, and 22 SSB. (Note: 33 SSB is also located here, but only deals with Naval entries.
  • Why it’s unique: The centre is famous for well-planned schedules and hospitality. The centre deals with candidates from Central and Western India.

3. Selection Centre South (SCS), Bengaluru

Established in 1949, SSB Bangalore is the primary selection centre for candidates from Southern India.

  • Location: Cubbon Road, FM Cariappa Colony, Bengaluru, Karnataka.
  • Boards: 17 SSB and 24 SSB. (12 SSB is also present here for Naval selection).
  • Why it’s unique: It is located in a prime military area near the centre of the town. It is known for a sophisticated environment and is a favourite among candidates for technical entry selection.

4. Selection Centre North (SCN), Jalandhar/Kapurthala

The latest addition to the Army’s selection infrastructure, Selection Centre North, was formed to ease the burden on the other three centres.

  • Location: Moving between Kapurthala and Jalandhar Cantt, Punjab.
  • Boards: 31 SSB and 32 SSB.
  • Why it’s unique: This centre is for candidates from North India (J&K, Punjab, Haryana, HP). It is a relatively new centre; hence, it has modern facilities and a very disciplined environment.

The 5-Day Army SSB Interview Process

The protocol for the test remains the same for all Army SSB Centres you are assigned to. The idea is to test for the 15 Officer-Like Qualities (OLQs) like Effective Intelligence, Social Adaptability, Courage, etc.

Day 1: Stage I (Screening)

The day is called the ‘Filter’ day.

  • OIR Test: Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning Test.
  • PP and DT: You are shown a blurred image for 30 seconds, then you write a story based on it. Then you are made to be a part of a group discussion to arrive at a consensus.
  • Result: The results are out. If you are cleared for Stage I, you move on to the next five days. Otherwise, you go home.

Day 2: Psychological Testing

A series of written tests to understand your subconscious mind.

  • TAT (Thematic Apperception Test): Write stories based on 12 images.
  • WAT (Word Association Test): Answer 60 words.
  • SRT (Situation Reaction Test): Solve 60 real-life problems in 30 minutes.
  • SD (Self Description): Write what your parents, teachers, and friends think of you.

Day 3 and 4: GTO Tasks

Now it is time to test your performance on the ground.

  • Group Activities: GD, Group Planning Exercise (GPE), Progressive Group Task (PGT), Half Group Task (HGT).
  • Individual Power: Individual Obstacles (IO), Lecturette, Command Task.
  • Final Group Task (FGT): The final test of group building skills.

Day 5: The Conference

The final battle. Here, you face the whole board of assessors (President, Deputy President, GTOs, and Psychologists) dressed in your uniform. They ask some general questions about your stay and a few situational questions before declaring the SSB Results.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1. Can I change my SSB Centre or Date?

Generally, no. UPSC or the Integrated HQ of MoD (Army) allots centres based on logistics. You can request a date change through the “Absentee Batch” only for valid reasons (like university exams), but changing the centre is rarely permitted.

Q2. What is the dress code for the Army SSB Interview?

  • GTO: White T-shirt, White shorts/tracksuit, and white PT shoes.
  • Interview/Conference: Formal shirt and trousers (tie/blazer optional).
  • Screening: Formals are recommended.

Q3. Is there a difference in difficulty between Allahabad and Bangalore?

No. This is a common myth. Every board follows the same Manship Selection System. While the “vibe” might differ, the assessment criteria for your personality are standardised across India.

Q4. How many times can I attempt the SSB?

There is no limit on the number of attempts as long as you meet the age and educational eligibility for the specific entry (NDA, CDS, TGC, etc.).

Q5. What happens if I get recommended?

If recommended, you stay back for another 3–5 days for a comprehensive Medical Examination at a nearby Military Hospital (MH).
